Weight Loss and Your Endocrine System

Hormones belong to the body's endocrine system. They are directly involved in weight loss efforts. Hormones are chemical messengers that are produced by glands such as the pancreas, adrenals, thyroid, and the pituitary. When hormones are released into the bloodstream they have the purpose of creating some type of effect in some area of the body. Basically, hormones tell the body what to do. The glands that produce these hormones regulate effects in designated areas of the body.

There are certain hormones that are responsible for the type of fat that is stored. These hormones also designate where on the body that fat is placed. The combination of these two things in large part leads to distortions in body shape. Hence, it also poses challenges in weight loss given the differences in the types of fat that is being stored along with the non even distribution of that stored fat throughout the body. This non even distribution of stored fat is also driven by the fact that fat in reality is stored energy. The body tends to place fat stores around vital organs to insure that these organs are always backed up by a ready reserve of energy so that they can always function.

Key to the discussion of weight loss are these hormones and glands that regulate metabolism. There are six fat burning hormones and three fat storing hormones which will be discussed in detail in coming posts. Weight management is governed by the actions and interactions of these 9 metabolic hormones.

Excessive body weight is a symptom of an unhealthy endocrine system. The problems can be with either the glands or the hormones, or it can be with both. When this system has problems our health and well-being is at risk.

The unhealthy state of our endocrine systems results from several different factors, the most prominent being the foods that we consume along with all of the environmental toxins / chemicals that we are exposed to particularly in the developed world.

There is evidence that the use of growth hormones to fatten poultry, cattle, and even farm raised fish that we eat are the source of developmental and other problems that affect our health and well-being. Added to this are the junk foods, fast foods, refined carbohydrates, and a preponderance of sugar that is hidden in many, many, of the foods that we buy and consume. Our bodies have been greatly compromised.........so has the body's ability to burn fat naturally as was intended.

Environmental toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, plastics and solvents all play a role in keeping us in an unhealthy state. The endocrine system is very sensitive to these environmental chemicals that we are exposed to daily (endocrine disruptions).

Real, it ain't gonna come back weight loss cannot occur until we first take the steps to make our bodies healthy. When we reach a healthy / healthier state of being, weight loss will happen naturally as the result of eating the foods that encourage fat burning as opposed to fat storage. Eating the right foods will free us from obesity and the potential for developing the chronic and life threatening diseases that are a part of this vicious cycle!

Losing those stubborn pounds and then keeping them off permanently must focus on addressing the issue of excessive body weight at the source of the problem, an unhealthy compromised endocrine system.

We will continue this discussion about hormones and the critical role that they play in weight loss in coming posts.
